Garry W. Reid

Garry W. Reid, 68, of Benicia passed away peacefully Sunday at his home. He was the son of Warren Reid of Buffalo, New York and Virginia Catlin of Sarasota, Florida. Garry was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and moved to the Bay Area 40 years ago and to Benicia in 1982. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Georgia Tech University followed by a Masters of Science in environmental engineering from the same university. While at Georgia Tech, he joined Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and he remained “brothers for life” with his dearest friends. Garry worked as an environmental engineer for more than 30 years. Places of employment include the following: Occidental Chemical, Stockton, CA, Kleinfelder Associates, Walnut Creek, CA, The Mark Group, Pleasant Hill, CA, GIS Solutions, Concord, CA and for Gound Zero Analysis, Manteca, CA. He was an avid golfer and a sports fanatic. Hours were spent watching all golf tournaments, basketball, especially the Warriors and of course his beloved 49ers. He was a gourmet cook and loved to have friends and family to entertain and BBQ. He also relished all types of music and will forever be Jimmy Buffet’s biggest fan. Garry was a windsurfer and avid traveler. He has traveled across the United States several times in his van but always came back to his home in Benicia where he could enjoy the magnificent sunsets with his wife and daughter. Garry was “larger than life”, his presence filled a room, and as most people strive to live life at 100%, Garry lived it at 200%. In his daughter’s words “No woman could have asked for a more fun, engaging and loving dad. He leaves behind a huge legacy for me.” A friend wrote “Garry was exceptional in the truest sense. He was full of life, honest, and uncompromising, a real Falstaff without the boasting. But most of all he was generous and caring and all of his friends and there were many, will miss him dearly. It’s a very, very, sad day.” Garry is survived by his wife Beth; daughters Chelsea Reid and her fiance Joshua Navez-Barry, Samantha Reid, his granddaughter Denise Elledge; brother Richard (Stephanie) Reid; nephews Warren Reid, Benjamin Chadwick and William Chadwick; niece Leigh -Ann Keener, his in-laws Helen & Edwin Chadwick; brother in laws Robert (Alejandra), Philip (Roberta) and Jeffrey Chadwick and his two dogs Lola & Aiya.
