Sharon Kay Fischer

Sharon Kay Fischer passed away on Sunday, February 5, following a brief illness. She was born on November 20, 1941 to Clifford and Marie Van Blaricom in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and came to California when she was in the second grade. She had been a Benicia resident since 1948 and graduated from Benicia High School in 1959. She attended Santa Rosa Jr. College and worked for more than 40 years as an executive secretary. In her semi-retirement years she worked in the extension program at St. Dominic’s Elementary School. Sharon was a longtime member of St. Dominic’s Catholic Church, Y.L.I. (Young Ladies Institute), the Benicia Bocce League, various bowling leagues, and also enjoyed playing in her Bunco group. She loved Benicia and was grateful every day for living in such a beautiful town. She always had a great sense of style and loved planting flowers in her backyard. Her favorite hobby was scrapbooking, and prior to her passing was working to create additional photo albums for her grandchildren. She was an avid Oakland Athletics fan and loved that her son Steve was drafted to play baseball with the organization. Sharon met her husband Bob while in a bowling league and they were married for 33 years until his passing. She was the quiet one while he was the guy who had the gift of gab and told corny jokes. They had three children, two daughters and a son. Sharon was a devoted wife and mother and always made sure her family came first. She worked full time, raised a family, and eventually became the primary caregiver for her husband who had multiple sclerosis. She worked hard to provide a comfortable life for her family and was always there for her children. She attended all school activities, dance and piano recitals, cheerleading and football games, baseball games and karate tournaments, and picked up kids late on Friday nights before they could drive. She was a room parent, always helped with school projects, chaperoned on field trips and did so much more. She made sure her family was raised to be polite and caring individuals, and was always willing to help others out. Sharon’s greatest joys in life were her four grandchildren and little dog Lucy who was by her side for the last 13 years. In retirement she was able to enjoy many special times with her family and all the fun things that her grandchildren participated in…dance recitals, musical performances, plays, sporting events, graduations, school functions, shopping trips, holidays and many vacations throughout the years. To describe her perfectly, she was selfless, loving, soft-spoken and truly enjoyed being in the company of others. She took life in stride no matter what challenge came her way. Although she was not one for attention, she had a great sense of humor. Sharon’s legacy to her children and grandchildren is the perfect example of love, kindness, dedication, sacrifice and always trying to do the right thing. Sharon is survived by her children Michele (Mike) Vannucci, Lisa Fischer and Stephen (Shereen) Fischer, sister-in-law Sharon Van Blaricom, her grandchildren Lauren, Kaitlyn and Amanda Vannucci, Hudson Fischer and her beloved dog Lucy. She was preceded in death by her parents Clifford and Marie Van Blaricom, her husband Robert (Bob) Fischer, her brother Rolland Van Blaricom, and in-laws Gus & Ann Fischer. Funeral services will be held at Passalacqua Funeral Chapel on Friday, February 17, at 12:30 pm. Burial will follow at St. Dominic’s Cemetery.
