Anthony L. Azevedo
October 10, 1924 - May 23, 2012
Anthony Lewis Azevedo, 87, passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side on Wednesday night. He was born in Stockton and has lived in Benicia since 1969. He spent 23 years in the United States Navy serving his country during the World War II, Korea and the Vietnam Wars. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1967. Many may remember "Tony" from his second career as a Toll Taker on the Benicia-Martinez Bridge. He worked there for 17 years and retired as Sergeant a second time 1986. Tony will be remembered by all as a fun loving man who had many colorful stories to tell, from his childhood spent with his siblings in Stockton and Tracy, working on the Railroad with his father and duck hunting with his cousins. He especially loved sharing his many experiences in the Navy such as stories from being a Mess Hall Supervisor and bringing in lobster for the troops, his experiences as Hospital Corpsman and being tutored in Pharmacy by a German POW, and being in the first Wave to make the Inchon Landing on "D-Day" in South Korea, in addition to the many escapades he seemed to always get himself into - all from a humorous and michevious perspective. Tony was a 43 year parishinor of St. Dominic’s Church, loved fishing and was a huge Giants fan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio Mathias Azevedo and Clara Lewis Azevedo. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Teruko “Terry” of Benicia; daughters, Cindy Clark and Jennifer Oliveira; son, Rick Azevedo; brother, Raymond; sisters, Lenora Traylor, Lucille Cooper and Catherine Spalinger; grandchildren, Ricky Jr., Chris, Steve, Jamie and Lisa; great grandchildren, Elena, Sierra, Kaitlyn, Ryan and Ethan. Burial with honors to follow in St. Dominic’s Cemetery. Visitation will be at the mortuary after 3 p.m., Tuesday. Family prefers donations to St. Dominic’s Church.
