Dorothy M. Lindsay
April 27, 1929 - July 27, 2017
Dorothy Lindsay passed away at her home on Thursday at the age of 88 years. Born in Kansas on April 27, 1927, Dorothy was raised in the small farming community of Spearville by her beloved Grandmother, Eva Prediger. Dorothy always considered her grandmother, who emigrated from Russia with several small children, to be the most important influence in her life. She was strong, resourceful, generous and a deeply religious Catholic, qualities which Dorothy’s family and friends would find in her. At the age of 16 Dorothy followed an uncle and aunt to Whittier, California where she got her first job working in a Five and Dime Store. She then moved to Sacramento where she was married at the age of 19. She and her husband, Charles Lindsay, had three children, Gale, William and Regina. The family moved to Benicia in 1949. After Dorothy was widowed in 1969, she went to work for 17 years in the Rectory of St. Dominic’s Parish in Benicia. She cooked, did the laundry, helped care for elderly Dominican priests, and because of her generosity and resourcefulness, took on so many other tasks at will. She was the first woman in the parish to bring the Eucharist to the ill and homebound. She eventually had a long list of people whom she visited at home well into her retirement. In retirement, Dorothy took the opportunity to travel with good friends. Her travels to Russia, Poland, Rome and the Holy Land were wonderful and moving experiences for her. In 2008 Dorothy suffered a stroke. Although this would impede her mobility, she made a remarkable recovery in so many ways. Her door remained open to a stream of visitors including the faithful Rosary Prayer Group which met weekly at her home. Dorothy never complained and was always a source of laughter, encouragement and inspiration to her visitors. In the last two years of her life she took up acrylic painting, and though naturally right handed, produced an incredible group of paintings with her left hand, many of which were of the beautiful hills and straits she viewed from her window. Since her stroke, Dorothy was lovingly cared for at home by her daughters Gale and Regina and her devoted care taker, Carmelita Gonzales. Her husband and son predeceased her. She is survived by two daughters, Gale Murray and Regina Marisal, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren, all of whom will greatly miss her. Vigil services will be held 7:00 p.m. Monday at St. Dominic’s Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at St. Dominic’s Church followed by burial in St. Dominic’s Cemetery. Family prefers donations to St. Dominic's Cemetery.
