Florene “Peg” Stone passed away at her home in Benicia, CA on Saturday, October 24, 2015. She was 94. Florene “Peg” Stone was born January 30, 1921 to Steven Mikolajczak Schultz and Josephine (Geiger) SkrzypczakSchultz on a farm near Mt. Vernon, Illinois. She is preceded in death by her parents, Steven and Josephine Schultz, eight sisters: Pauline Robinson, Martha Brookman, Clara Green, Sue Eash, Lenora Schultz who died as an infant, Eleanor Brookman, Margie Coutre, and Mary Meyer; and three brothers: Victor Schultz, Godfrey “Mick” Schultz, and Leo “Jack” Schultz. She is survived by nieces and nephews: Barbara Buckingham of Las Vegas, NV; Sharon (Ron) Kerst of Livermore, CA; Sandy (Bill) Graddy of Mt. Vernon, IL; David (Faye) Schultz of Mt. Vernon, IL; Estell (Glenn) Smith of Springfield, IL; Randy (Tracy) Coutre of Plainfield, IL; Diane Coutre of Santa Monica, California, and Judy (David) Mason of Texico, IL. She met her husband, Leonard Stone, on a double date with her sister Sue and Sue’s boyfriend, Roy Eash. Shortly after Sue and Roy married, “Peg” and Leonard were married. They were married May 10, 1942, by the Justice of the Peace in Wayzata, Minnesota. Her husband Leonard preceded her in death November 10, 2003. “Peg” had been a resident of Benicia, California, for 65 years. She and her husband along with her sister Sue and brother-in-law Roy had a novelty business that they moved from Minnesota to Benicia in 1950. Their shop was on First Street in Benicia near the Tannery Building. She later worked at other jobs, including working one year for Levi Strauss & Co in Vallejo as a pants presser. One summer she and her sister Sue worked in an orchard cutting fruit for drying. She later became a nurse at the Veteran’s Hospital in Martinez where she worked for 15 years. Peg and her husband, Leonard enjoyed being members of the Benicia Senior Center and going on bus trips with the Benicia Seniors to many areas of the country. They especially enjoyed gambling trips to Reno and other casinos. “Peg” was a member of the Gateway Chapter No. 30 of Eastern Star, a member of the Vallejo Chapter of NARFE (National Active and Retired Federal Employees) Association, and a member of the Community Congregational Church. Funeral services for Florene “Peg” Stone will be Saturday, November 7, at Passalacqua Funeral Home in Benicia. Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m., followed by the service at 2:00 p.m. A reception of remembrance following the service.
