Larry Prophet

Larry Prophet, born June 4, 1942, in Napa, California, to Vivian and Clifford “Sandy” Prophet, died at age 70 on February 24, 2013, in Benicia, California, after a long illness. A longtime Vallejoan, Larry attended Carquinez Heights Elementary, Franklin Junior High, and graduated from Vallejo Senior High School in 1960. He worked in the retail shoe business at Higgins Shoe Co., and tended bar at George’s Den and Big Al’s, until becoming a Pipefitter in Shop 56 at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, from which he retired in 1990. Larry loved the game of baseball and played most of his life, including fast pitch softball in the travel leagues with Redwood Pharmacy, Miller Buick, and Conner Construction. When his playing days were over, he coached and managed several teams for Vallejo Little League, Vallejo Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio League, Mickey Mantle League, and St. Patricks-St. Vincents High School. Larry loved to travel and made many trips in his RV throughout the U.S. and Canada and extended his travel abroad to Europe, Central America, Australia, and New Zealand. His other great passion was his 1955 Chevy Nomad, which he bought in 1969 and carefully restored to its original condition. He was a proud member of the Boyz Under the Hood, Solano Classics, and the Chevy Nomad Association car clubs and enjoyed driving with his friends and family to car shows throughout the U.S. Larry is preceded in death by his parents Clifford (Sandy) and Vivian Prophet, brother Ronald Prophet, and son Edward Prophet. He is survived by the love of his live, Cheryl Prophet, to whom he was married for 40 years and whom he credits with enriching and extending his life through her constant love and care, especially during the past 3 years. He is survived by his children Denise (Raymond) Armstorff of Benicia, Larry Prophet, Jr. of Williams, Christopher Prophet of Benicia, and Meghan Prophet of Los Angeles; his 3 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. The Prophet family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the physicians and staff of Kaiser Permanente and Wellbound for the wonderful care provided to Larry during his illness. They give special thanks to physicians Gerald Bourne, M.D., Celeste Spillane, M.D., Kourosh Mastali, M.D., Chong Lee, M.D., Kar Own, M.D., and Ericson Aquino, M.D. and the dedicated staff at Wellbound Dialysis Center. A celebration of Larry’s life will be held on Saturday, March 2, at 1:00 PM at the Benicia Historical Museum, Stone Hall, 2060 Camel Road, Benicia CA, 94510. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, or National Kidney Foundation.
