Lowell C. Hensley

Longtime Benicia resident Lowell Carl Hensley passed away peacefully on August 4, 2013, at the age of 85. Born in Menlo Park, California, he and his family relocated to Benicia in 1961. His career in the Building industry spanned 66 years. Upon moving to Benicia he was employed with various contractors throughout the area before starting his own architectural drafting business where he designed many commercial buildings and residential homes within the community. He was employed as a Building Inspector with the City of Benicia and after retiring from the City in 1988, went on to work for Britland Construction Co. developing the Southampton subdivision, the Benicia Housing Authority, and finally the Benicia Clocktower. He loved to work out in the gym and run in local marathons including the Bay to Breakers. He was a craftsman that could work magic with anything made out of wood, as well as an artist who had some of his artwork featured at the Solano County Fair. He was a longstanding member of the Carpenters Local 180, Moose Lodge, and Elks Club. Once retired, he enjoyed remodeling things around the house, square dancing, and traveling with the Benicia Seniors along with his wife. He opened his home and heart to a multitude of friends and family and utilized his many skills to help in times of need. He always had a smile on his face and could be counted on to provide a laugh with a good joke. He embraced life as if it were an adventure. Integrity was his trademark and in some small way he touched the lives of all those he met. His family will miss his unconditional love and support. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Betty Hensley; his three children, Sherilynn and husband John, Randall and wife Tamara, and Cynthia. He was blessed with four Grandchildren; Justin, Tyler, Blake, and Brianna. He is preceded in death by his parents Luther and Cressie Hensley and Brother Calvin Hensley. A Memorial Mass will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 16th at St. Dominic’s Church located at 475 East I Street, Benicia, California with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request donations to the American Cancer Society in his honor.
