Richard Lubin
June 15, 1926 - April 18, 2015
Richard "Dick" Lubin passed away peacefully on April 18th at his home in Benicia. He is survived by Lee, his loving wife of 65 years, two children Carole Lubin Reiss & Gail Lubin, his sister Alice Yuwiler, son-in-law Peter, niece Janet Yuwiler, nephews Michael & Kenneth (Maryanne) Yuwiler and a host of friends. Dick was born in the borough of Harlem, Manhattan, New York. He served in the US Navy as a RADAR technician in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He graduated from UCLA and received advanced degrees from California State University, Long Beach and California State University, San Diego. He taught at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and held teaching and administrative positions in the Los Angeles Unified School System - where, in the late 1960s, he introduced students to the emerging field of computer programming. Dick served as mathematics consultant to Los Angeles County Board of Education. After retirement, the Lubins lived for a time in Southern California and Silicon Valley. He and his wife moved to Benicia in 1989. Dick was strong bridge player. He skied enthusiastically into his eighties, raised prized orchids, and enjoyed exploring the mysteries of higher mathematics and number theory. He was an artist, often making metal sculptures. Both he and Lee were staunch supporters of Arts Benicia. An avid traveler and photographer, he and Lee visited South America, Asia, Scandinavia, Africa, and most recently, Russia. The Lubins often vacationed with their friends to Monterey, Mendocino, and the Russian River. Dick wrote an occasional humorous column for the Benicia Herald. Dick was a “soft touch” for numerous charities and philanthropic organizations. He requested that his passing not be marked with flourishes, flags or ceremony. A memorial celebrating his life will be held at the Benicia Veterans Memorial Hall, 1150 First Street at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 1st. Casual attire preferred. He will be buried in Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in a private ceremony. Instead of flowers, Dick would have appreciated friends contributing to the Benicia Education Foundation (beniciaeducationfoundation.org). Dick Lubin was a mensch, a clear thinker, and a true friend. The world is diminished by his passing.
